Miami will look to secure its place atop the ACC Coastal Division standings this afternoon when it hosts North Carolina at Sun Life Stadium (2:30pm ET start time, ESPNU). College Football Saturday odds have the visiting Tar Heels listed as a -8 against the spread road favorite; the Over/Under is set at 69 points. The Hurricanes are a +250 moneyline play ($100 wins $250) to remain unbeaten in conference play.
North Carolina got off to a rocky start under new head coach Larry Fedora, losing two of its first three games, but it has since rebounded. The Tar Heels ride a three game win streak into today’s contest, after knocking off East Carolina, Idaho, and Virginia Tech.
The streak apparently has convinced the odds makers and betting public that North Carolina is the team to beat in today’s showdown with the Hurricanes.
Another factor contributing to the rather large spread could be Miami’s most recent performance. The Hurricanes saw a three game win streak of their come to a halt last weekend as they were destroyed 41-3 by Notre Dame at Soldier Field.
The blowout loss was the second of the season suffered by Miami; the team was blasted 52-13 in a week two game at Kansas State.
Despite those poor performances, the Hurricanes are a decent option at +8. Miami has won and covered in four of its last six games as a home underdog and it has won three of the last four in this series as a host, beating the Tar Heels by an average of 20.3 points per game.
