College football on Saturday night and we will see the Wyoming Cowboys travel to San Jose, California to take on the San Jose State Spartans. The game has a start time of 7:00 PM (Eastern) and will be televised locally. Current odds for the game have San Jose State listed as 9 point favorites, while the total sits at 71.5.
Analysis: The Wyoming Cowboys started the year by nearly winning in Nebraska, and then followed that game up by winning their next three, but they have not been able to hold that momentum as they are just 1-2 in their last 3 games, including a 30 point home loss to Colorado State last week. Wyoming hadn't been beaten that badly in the annual Border War matchup in close to 90 years, and found itself behind by a 31-7 score just moments into the second half. Quarterback Brett Smith, has been stellar for the Cowboys for most of the year, but connected on 21-of-36 passes for 246 yards and a score while being sacked three times and tossing a couple of interceptions in the loss. Overall this year the Cowboys are 13th in total offense (504.1 ypg) and 22nd in passing (301.7 ppg, while putting up 35.4 ppg, which is 34th in the nation. The run defense for the Cowboys has been abysmal this season, permitting 246.9 ypg which is 117th in the country this week, while overall they are 95th allowing 440.6 ypg on the year and 81st in points allowed, at 28.9 ppg. This is the first meeting between the programs since the Cowboys captured a 30-10 win back in 1997, pushing its advantage in the all-time series to 6-1 in the process.
The Spartans have not played since Oct. 12 when they topped Colorado State in Fort Collins, 34-27. The win was the second in a row for the program, after losing three consecutive games. San Jose State is currently 2-1 in league play. The Spartans offense is lead by David Fales, who was one of the most accurate passers in the country last season. This year he is converting 59.6 percent of his attempts, resulting in 323.8 ypg, but his yardage and his 12 aerial scores have been offset by his eight interceptions. Chandler Jones, with his 36 receptions, has more than twice the number of receiving yards (676) than any of his teammates and has scored six touchdowns on the year, but the rushing attack is another story altogether, producing only 119.7 ypg. The Defense for the Spartans has been below average, ranking 85th in total defense and 77th in scoring defense, allowing 28.5 ppg on the year.
Pick: I will be going with the Spartans in this one. David Fales is a heck of a QB and the Spartans are a good team at home. We also have a Spartan team that won on the road vs Colorado State, while the Cowboys were beaten at home by them by 30 points last week. Wyoming surprised earlier in the year, but they are slumping right now, while the Spartans are surging. I say they continue to surge with a 10 point plus win here.
