Week 3 college football and the UCLA Bruins will travel to Austin, Texas to take on the Texas Longhorns. The game has a start time of 8:00 pm (Eastern) and will be televised on FOX. Current Vegas odds have the Bruins listed as 7.5 point favorites, while the total is set at 50.5.
Analysis: The Bruins came into the year as a team that may have been in the final 4 playoff, and even though they are 2-0 on the year, they have not played all that well thus far. Last week was really shocking and their game vs Memphis pretty much went down to the wire in their 42-35 win. The offense for the bruins had a much better showing than it did vs Virginia, as they rolled up 540 yards of total offense in the win over Memphis. In the game Brett Hundley had a nice bounce back game as he went 33 of 44 for 396 yards, with 3 TDs and a pick. Thomas Duarte had a nice game as well, catching 4 balls for 110 yards and 2 TDs, while Jordan Payton chipped in with 104 yards receiving. The Bruins are ranked 60th in total offense (449 ypg) and 58th in scoring (35 ppg), while on defense they rank 97th in yards allowed (427.5 ypg) and 85th in points allowed (27.5 ppg).
The Texas longhorns had a rough offseason and now it has translated into a rough regular season start, as they have lost their starting QB, David Ash and are off another blowout loss to BYU. The Longhorns might have Shipley back for this one, but still they are hurting along the OL and missing a key WR in Daje Johnson. Last week the Longhorns trailed BYU just 6-0 at the half, but then the Cougars got rolling on their way to a 41-7 win. The Longhorns come in ranked 116th in the nation in total offense (305.5 ypg) and 108th in scoring 922.5 ppg), while on the defensive side of the ball they rank 16th in yards allowed (263.5 ypg), 8th vs the pass (98 ypg) and 69th in scoring (24 ppg).
Pick: I will be going with the Under in this one. The UCLA defense has been a sore spot for them, but it won't take much for them to keep this very depleted Texas offense in check. The Longhorns are a mess offensively and will not run an uptempo which should keep the UCLA offense from getting as many possessions as they do. No when the Bruins have the ball I see them struggling in this one as their OL is still very weak and they are taking on a very strong Texas defense that will need to use that defense this year if they hope to win games this year. Texas will look to grind it out and play conservative, while relying on their defense and that should clearly keep this game at most in the in the lower 40's, while I do expect it to played in the 30's at best.
