College Football Kent State Golden Flashes at Buffalo Bulls Preview: Start Time, Odds, Free Pick

College Football Week 4 gets underway with a Wednesday night matchup that will have the Kent State Golden Flashes travel to Western New York to take on the Buffalo Bulls. The game is scheduled for an 8:00 PM (Eastern) start time and it will be televised live on ESPNU. Currently the odds for the game have Buffalo favored by 4 points, while the total sits at 52. Currently 80% of the Public is on Buffalo, while 84% is on the Over. Free Analysis: Kent State's season has begun as expected a blow out of Towson State and a 47-14 loss to Kentucky. That was the exception as many thought the Golden Flashes could make a game of it with the Wildcats but in the end neither side of the ball put up much of a fight. The fact is, Kent State did put up a fight as they trailed 17-14 in the third but were outscored 30-0 over the final 25 minutes. The Golden Flashes were out gained 539-409 but UK simply made every play late and KSU didn't. Kent’s current #1 QB, Spencer Keith is in his third season with the program but his YPA after two games is only 4.85, worse than last season’s lousy 5.18. They need the Thunder and Lightning backfield of Trayion Durham (240 lbs.) and Dri Archer (175) to lead the way. The duo produced 165 yards at five yards per chance on 24 totes with a touchdown each. The Kent defense was to be a strength of this team but they did allow 21 points to Towson State and were shredded for 539 yards by Kentucky’s no-huddle offense. Kent's best DB (Norman Wolfe) was lost in that game and he had 8 career INT's so he will be missed. Kent State is just 13 ATS as dogs of 4 or more vs an opponent off a 20+ point win.

Through two games it's hard to pinpoint exactly what Buffalo has or doesn't have as a 22 point loss to Georgia didn't tell us a thing. I don't think a 56-34 victory over Morgan State told us much either except that the Bulls offense looked good versus a sub division squad. Buffalo clearly held a huge advantage offensively with 571 yards and 28 first downs yet only controlled the ball for less than 20 minutes which told us of the Bulls ability to strike quickly. Alex Zordich was 17-24 for 237 yards with Alex Neutz the receiver of choice with eight catches for 154 yards with four touchdowns. The rushing attack was even better with over 300 yards and over 9.5 yard average. Brandon Oliver did most of the damage with a 25 carry 238 yard afternoon with two scores. The Buffalo Bulls are ranked 39 on offense, averaging 459.0 yards per game. The Bulls are averaging 252.5 yards rushing and 206.5 yards passing so far this season. Buffalo has had problems on defense as they have allowed 45 and 34 points in their 1st 2 games, after allowing 29 ppg last year. Buffalo is 2-10 ATS in their last 12 as a conference home favorite, but 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 vs the Golden Flashes.

Free Pick: Gonna go with the Bulls in this one. Neither team has a common opponent yet but both teams have played an SEC team and I feel that Buffalo was more impressive in their loss than Kent was in theirs. Trailing by 24-6 in the first half the Bulls scored the final 10 points to pull within 8 at the half vs a powerful Georgia squad. The Bulls put up 23 points and 347 yards vs them, including 199 yards on the ground. The Bulls lost by just 22 points in that game covering the spread by 16 points. Kent State faced a much weaker SEC squad in Kentucky and were blown out by 33 points, as 6.5 dogs. They were outgained by 130 yards in the game and were outgained by 39 yards in their 20 point win over Towson to open the season. They are not playing all that well and to make matters worse they just lost CB Norman Wolfe (8 Career INT's) for the year. The Flashes still havce a solid defense but will struggle on offense and just won't be able to put up enough points to keep this one close vs a Bulls team that has averaged 39.5 ppg, played better vs tougher SEC competition and is at home. Bulls by at least a TD in this one.
