The Boise State Broncos are on the road tonight in college football action, taking on the BYU Cougars. The game is scheduled for a 10:15 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPN2. Currently the betting odds for the game have Boise State favored by about a field goal to pick up the win.
This should be a solid matchup between a pair of great programs out west. Boise State comes in ranked 20th in the country, they picked up a 16-13 victory over Washington in the opening game. The Broncos scored all 16 of their points in the first half, but the defense was good enough to keep the visiting Huskies off the board long enough to seal the win.
BYU is going to be playing without quarterback Taysom Hill, again, as he went down with a season-ending injury last week. Hill has had some of the worst luck in his career, losing two full season to injuries now. The Cougars substituted true freshman Tanner Mangum into the lineup after Hill went down and he tossed the Hail Mary at the end to beat Nebraska on the final play. BYU really threw the football well last week and they'll look to continue that tonight against Boise.
The Broncos are 4-1 against BYU and won the most recent game 55-30 in 2013. Boise has 17 returning starters back on the squad this season, giving them the needed experience to pick up wins in games like this. The game last week was a close one on the scoreboard, but Boise State was able to hold a comfortable edge in total yardage. Boise QB Ryan Finley didn't have a great game last week and overall Boise wants to improve on the running game as well.
Despite 185 yards on the ground last week, the Broncos averaged just 3.5 yards per carry. Boise State believes they can establish the run game early and make a big impact in this one on the ground. BYU's run defense last week was stout, though, holding Nebraska to only 126 yards.
BYU at home is going to be tough and it will be a great atmosphere. If Boise State can run the football consistently, they'll win.
