The top-ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs welcome in the Arkansas Razorbacks in college football action on Saturday. The game is scheduled for a 7:15 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPN2. Currently the odds for the game have the Bulldogs favored by double digits to get the win.
The Bulldogs have risen to the top spot in the college rankings after starting the season unranked. Dan Mullen's group has survived a pretty tough schedule, but not the worst in the country. They'll host a feisty Arkansas bunch in this game tonight with the Hogs having upset on their minds.
Arkansas won big over UAB last week but still hasn't picked up an SEC win dating back a few years. While they've been close and have played well at times in the conference slate, the Hogs just can't get over the proverbial hump. Arkansas runs the football very well and will look to get that going tonight with both Johnathan Williams and Alex Collins, who have combined to run for better than 1,500 yards and 19 touchdowns on the season. Mississippi State is pretty solid against the run, but that's what the Razorbacks are good at, so changing the gameplan at this point in the season doesn't seem like it would work.
The Bulldogs come in bringing an offense that averages better than 42 points per game, piling up more than 520 yards of offense. Dak Prescott has been the man for the Bulldogs, throwing for nearly 1,700 yards and 15 touchdowns while running for nearly 700 yards and 10 touchdowns as well. Prescott is a serious contender for the Heisman trophy as long as the Bulldogs keep winning. They've got some very winnable games the next few weeks but have to travel to Alabama and Ole Miss still remaining on the schedule.
This will be Arkansas' first road game in a while and the Hogs are off next week. They should put a pretty good effort into this one, but the home team in this series has won five of the last seven games overall. This is also the first time the Bulldog are playing at home as the No. 1 team in the country, so the crowd should be even more ready to go.
Arkansas can stay in this game if they get a good defensive effort and they can sustain drives while running the football. The less than two-touchdown spread indicates this could be a closer game than many think, and with the Hogs keeping the football on the ground it will keep the clock moving.
