The Purdue Boilermakers are set to take on the Arizona State Sun Devils in the opening game of the Jimmy V Classic inside Madison Square Garden. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on?ESPN. This is the first of two games inside Madison Square Garden tonight in the Jimmy V Classic. It features Purdue and Arizona State, a pair of teams that are both coming off wins that followed a loss. The Sun Devils knocked off UNLV in impressive fashion on Saturday, but the previous game saw them lose by almost 50 points to Kentucky down in Atlantis.
Certainly the Sun Devils would like to play better than they did in that one, where they gave up 115 total points. Purdue has looked like it will contend for a Big Ten title this season. They just beat up on Morehead State following a tough loss at Louisville, which itself is a pretty solid program. The Boilers only other loss came against Villanova.
The Boilermakers are led by big men Caleb Swanigan (17.5 ppg, 11.5 rpg) and Isaac Haas (14.8 ppg, 4.9 rpg). They are a big front line that should be able to pound on the interior against the Sun Devils in this one. Arizona State has an excellent big man in Obinna Oleka, who averages a double-double per game himself, but he’s not going to be able to do it alone.
Tra Holder, Torian Graham and Shannon Evans II each average at least 17 points per game for Arizona State, a team that has some offensive options. But Purdue plays strong defense that holds opponents to 20 points less per game on average from what Arizona State scores. But in this neutral site game, being played at the world’s most famous arena, the Sun Devils will look to their scorers to keep them in it.
