After a 6-7 finish in 2010 most people were not so hot on Clemson entering last season, but the Tigers defied their detractors, putting together a 10-4 record that featured an ACC title game win over Virginia Tech. Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney welcomes seven starters from an offense that averaged 33.6 points per game back to Clemson this year. The defense also brings back seven starters, which means the team should improve upon the 29.3 points per contest it allowed last season. Given the returning talent, which includes quarterback Tajh Boyd, running back Andre Ellington, and receiver Sammy Watkins, Clemson stands a decent chance at surprising the pundits again in 2012.
The Tigers schedule features potential non-conference hiccups against Auburn and South Carolina; however, Clemson is presently favored in those two games by -4.5 and -3.5 points respectively. The team’s two biggest league challenges will come at Florida State and home to Virginia Tech. Clemson, which beat the Seminoles 35-30 at home last year, is listed as a +8 road dog to FSU. The Hokies game has yet to be lined, but given the fact that the Tigers topped Virginia Tech twice last season, one would assume they will be favored over Frank Beamers crew.
