CFB Free Picks: Wyoming Cowboys at Nebraska Cornhuskers

College Football Week 1 continues tonight and we will see the Wyoming Cowboys travel to the Lincoln, Nebraska to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The start time is 8:00 pm (Eastern) and the game will be televised on the Big 10 Network. Current  Odds have Nebraska listed as 30 point favorites, while the total sits at 67.

Analysis: Wyoming coach Dave Christensen had a winning year in his first year, a losing year in 2010, a winning year in 2011 and a losing year last year. But this year they are weak on talent and even with 14 starters back they should be in line for another long year. Junior quarterback Brett Smith returns after, throwing for 2,832 yards with 27 TDs only 6 INTs. The WR corp loses it top receiver from last year, but still they return 4 players that caught at least 30 passes last year, so they should be in good shape there. The running game put up just 125 ypg last year, but they could improve on that with their top 4 ball carriers back. Last year this defense allowed 33.4 ppg and 470 ypg and and even with 7 starters back this year, Phil Steele still has all three units of this defense ranked either 10th or 11th in the MWC. This year they lose their top 3 tacklers and just have a lack of talent and depth everywhere on this defense.

Nebraska had a nice year end badly as they were 10-2 heading into the Big 10 Title game, but they lost that game 70-31 to Wisconsin and then lost 45-31 to Georgia in the Capital One bowl. Bo Pelini has done a great job here, taking the Huskers to a 48-20 record over their last 5 years, but the fans want more. Taylor Martinez finally had a breakout year, passing for 2871 yards with 23 TD's, while running for another 1019 yards and 10 TD's. A true dual threat QB. He is back and so is top RB Ameer Abdullah, who had 1132 yards on the ground and 8 TD's last year. Both Martinez and Ameer will be playing behind a very deep and experienced OL that has 4 seniors and 1 Jr in the starting 5, and there is plenty of depth behind them. Nebraska brings back just 2 of their top 10 tacklers, but the players that have departed will be replaced by younger and more athletic players. The defensive backfield will be the strength of this group after allowing opposing quarterbacks to complete 47.1 % of their passes, while allowing just 168 ypg through the air. 3 starters from that group return, with 2 of them being seniors. Defense is a weakness on this team, but the offense will bail them out more tines than not.

Pick: Lets look at the Under in this one. The Nebraska defense will struggle this year, but not in this one vs a Wyoming offense that doesn't have a lot of pop. Nebraska will put up plenty of points this year, but I don't see them hitting 50 in this one. I see a game played in the upper 50's at best.
