California Chrome 2014 Triple Crown Odds

The Triple Crown of horse racing consists of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes. The Triple Crown is considered the most elusive feat in horse racing, and perhaps in all of sports. California Chrome looks to take a step closer with its running in the Preakness Stakes tonight. He is favored to win the Preakness and his odds to win the Tripe Crown are +220 for yes he will and -285 for no he won't.

Winning the Triple crown will be a tough task for California Chrome as evidenced by the fact that there have been just 11 Triple Crown Winners in the history of thoroughbred racing.

The very first winner of the Triple Crown was Sir Barton, back in 1919, but it wasn't called the Triple Crown back then as that term wasn't used at the time. Later in 1948, Sir Barton was recognized as the first Triple Crown winner. The phrase Triple Crown was actually used for the first time in 1930, when Gallant Fox won it.

The only Jockey to have ever won the Triple Crown twice was Eddie Arcaro, who won in first in 1941 while riding Whirlaway and then again in 1948 while riding Citation. In 1977 Seattle Slew became the first and so far the only horse to ever win the Triple Crown while undefeated.

The last Triple Crown winner was Affirmed back in 1978 and that makes this the longest drought between Triple Crown winners. The Previous long was the 25 years from Citation's win in 1948 to Secretariats Win in 1973.

California Chrome won the Kentucky Derby, which is the first leg of the Triple Crown and now has his sights setting on taking the 2nd leg, which is the Preakness Stakes. The Preakness is 1 and 3/16 miles in length and the winner is covered by a blanket of black-eyed Susans.
