Belmont Stakes Odds: Frac Daddy

The 2013 Triple Crown season concludes today at Belmont Park with the one-and-a-half mile, $1 million Belmont Stakes. This year's Belmont features a full field of 14 colts (and one filly) in what appears to be an extremely wide-open race featuring Kentucky Derby winner Orb and Preakness winner Oxbow. This race also features some longshots and one of them is Frac Daddy, who is listed as 30-1 Odds to win the Belmont Stakes.

The race is open to 3-year-old thoroughbreds that weight 126 pounds and will run the 1.5-mile course. Frac Daddy finished 16th and was never a factor in the Kentucky Derby and was a last-minute addition to the Belmont field after training brilliantly over the past several weeks at Churchill Downs. Frac Daddy, who finished second at 23-1 Odds  in the Arkansas Derby, arrived at Belmont on Tuesday and wasted little time getting a good feel for the racetrack, open-galloping 1 1/8 miles in 2:09 and change from the mile pole with a 25.52-second quarter-mile from the top of the lane to the wire thrown in for good measure.

When word came down that Frac Daddy was clocked working 5 furlongs in 1:04.75 on Wednesday, it was as much news to trainer Kenny McPeek as anyone. "I caught him going :372⁄5 for the three-eighths and that wasn't what I had planned at all. I wanted to go in :15, :15, :15 yesterday and then work him today," McPeek said. "So today we slowed him down."

The fact the Arkansas Derby runner-up trained faster than planned didn't take anything off McPeek's belief he could have another upset Belmont Stakes victory in his pocket. McPeek saddled the biggest upset winner in the race's history when Sarava took the 2002 Belmont at odds of 70-1. Frac Daddy may not threaten that mark, but the son of Scat Daddy who has just one win in seven starts is going to need a similar breath-snatching run in order to make up the more than 24 lengths that separated him from Kentucky Derby winner Orb on the first Saturday in May. Frac Daddy has won just once in seven starts and not since earning his diploma at Churchill Downs last November.
