The BBVA Compass Bowl may not be the most prestigious postseason contest, but it features a potentially exciting matchup, nonetheless. Big East squad Pittsburgh will square off against the SEC’s Ole Miss Rebels in the January 5th bowl; the game, which will be played at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, is scheduled to kick off at 1:00pm ET on ESPN. Pittsburgh Panthers vs. Ole Miss Rebels BBVA Compass Bowl odds are favoring Hugh Freeze’s troops at -3.5 against the spread. The total in the game is currently set at 52 points.
Pittsburgh had every reason to fall on its face this year after Todd Graham, who replaced Dave Wannstedt in 2011, decided to bolt for Arizona State in the offseason. Despite the upheaval and a 0-2 start that featured a loss to Youngstown State, the Panthers did not fold.
First year Head Coach Paul Chryst and his team showed tremendous determination, finishing 6-6 with impressive wins over Virginia Tech and Rutgers and a near upset of top ranked Notre Dame.
Pitt will face an Ole Miss team that always displayed some grit and tenacity as it bounced back from a horrid 2-10 campaign under the direction of a new coach as well. Hugh Freeze guided the Rebels to a 6-6 record and a 3-5 SEC mark by earning wins over Auburn, Arkansas, and Mississippi State.
While Ole Miss failed in its effort to break even in league play, it did play No. 2 Alabama tough, relatively speaking, in Tuscaloosa (33-14) and it nearly knocked off No. 10 Texas A&M in Oxford (30-27).
