2015 New York Jets Super Bowl Odds

The New York Jets have been mired in mediocrity the last couple of year and this year appears to be no different. Vegas odds currently have the New York Jets at +850 to win the AFC East and +7000 to win the 2015 Super Bowl. Let’s take a quick look at the New York Jets, along with their 2014 Schedule.

Last year the Jets ranked 29th in the league in scoring, at 18.1 ppg, while also ranking 25th in total yards (318.1 ypg), 31st in passing (183.3 ypg) and 6th in rushing (134.9 ypg). Truly was one of the worst offenses in the league last year and it went downhill before the season even started when Mark Sanchez went down with an injury in preseason. From there it was Geno Smith’s show for much of the year and he showed promise at times, but still it was not an effective offense. Smith was at his best when scrambling, but the Jets do have a solid running game this year with Chris Johnson, Bilal Powel and Chris Ivory in the backfield, so he will not be expected to run as much this year. Smith will be getting a big time weapon to throw to in Eric Decker, who averaged 86 catches, 1176 yards and 12 TD’s the last 2 seasons with Peyton Manning. The OL is very solid and this offense should be much better than last years group.

Defensively, the Jets were average, as they ranked 19th in points allowed (24.2 ppg), 11th in yards allowed (334.9 ypg), 22nd vs the pass (246.7 ypg) and 3rd vs the run (88.3). The strength of this defense was their front 7 and it showed in their run defense that was ranked 3 rd in the league.  Big part of this defense was Sheldon Richardson, who was named defensive rookie of the year last year, and Muhammad Wilkerson, who had 10.5 sacks last year. The weak area in the defense is the secondary which really missed Revis a year ago. The Jets did address their secondary needs with the drafting of S Calvin Pryor (Louisville) and CB Dexter McDougal (Maryland) in 2 of their first 3 picks. If the new parts in the secondary can play as expected then this will be a top 10 defense this year, because the front 7 is stout.

The Offense for the Jets will be better this year, but still not great. Decker will help in the passing game, but still this will be a grind it out offense that just won’t put a ton of points on the board. The defense will be better than last year overall, but still I just don’t see the offense scoring enough to warrant a playoff spot for this team. The Jets take on the 9th toughest schedule in the league and that has me calling for another 8-8 year by the Jets.
