The 2014 World Cup continues today when one of the favorites to win the tournament, Germany, take on Ghana in the group stage. The game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. (EST) start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPN. Currently the odds for the match have Germany listed as a heavy favorite to win.
The Germans are one of the top picks to win this World Cup. They showed why in their opening match of the group stages, whacking Portugal 4-0 and getting a three-goal effort from Thomas Müller. Today they'll look to punch their tickets to the Round of 16 by beating a Ghana team looking to find a way into the win column.
Ghana played the United States tough in their opening match, but they played catch-up form the opening minute as Clint Dempsey scored the fastest goal in American World Cup history. Ghana briefly tied the game before the Americans got a late goal and spoiled Ghana's effort. In this match against the Germans, Ghana will have to play wide open from the beginning in order to find a way to try and get three points and a victory.
Both Germany and the United States have secured three points so far this World Cup and if either of them can win their next game, they'll be in a prime position to reach the knockout stage. Ghana will look to play spoilers, as they did to the United States the past two World Cups, in this match against Germany. A Ghana win doesn't mean the Germans will be knocked out of the Round of 16, but it will make the road just a tad bit more difficult. The Germans are looking to leave no doubt, however, and earn a second group stage victory in this one.
These two clubs met on the pitch during the 2010 World Cup group stage as well. The Germans scored a goal in the 16th minute and held on for the 1-0 victory.
Muller has proven he is one of the best attackers in the world and he will look to continue scoring goals in this matchup.
The Black Stars are an aggressive team but that could prove to be their undoing in this game. The Germans will look to capitalize on their mistakes and if they play at their potential, there's no way Ghana can beat them. But then again, Ghana does have their proverbial backs against the wall in this matchup and we think they can and will play well. But in the end, it won't be enough as the Germans will prevail.
