2014 Winter Olympics Men's Super G Start Time, Odds, Free Pick

Bode Miller and Ted Ligety's Failures Raise Future Concerns for Sochi Games

The Super G is the next Alpine even for the men at the 2014 Winter Olympics. The event takes place Sunday morning (2/16), with a start time of 1:00 am (ET). The event will be televised live at www.nbcolympics.com or you can check your local listings to find out when you can catch the action on television, tape-delay style. Odds for the top 15 in the event are listed below, with a slightly detailed look at the top 6 in the field.

What Is the Super G? The Super G, also know as the Super Giant, first made its Olympic debut in the 1988 games in Calgary. The Super G is a timed speed event that combines the speed requirements of the downhill competition and technical aspects of the slalom, as the skiers must also maneuver through gates spread in a similar fashion to the giant slalom. The super-G requires athleticism, finesse and fearlessness to reach the Olympic podium.

Aksel Lund Svindal (Norway) is the favorite at 3/2 odds. Aksel is one of the best skiers in the world, but has failed to medal at the Sochi games so far, finishing 4th in the downhill and 6th in the super combined. This is, however his best event as he has won 4 season titles in the super and 12 career races in the event, including winning gold in this event in the 2010 games in Vancouver. He does come in with some confidence in this event as he has 2 World Cup circuit wins in the Super G in 2014. This is his best vent and he may just be ready for his first medal of the 2014 games.

Matthias Mayer (Austria) is next at 4/1 odds. Matthias has had a nice Olympics so far, as he took the gold in the downhill. Though that was an impressive performance, his strongest event is actually the Super G, and he looks like a major contender to add another piece of hardware to his collection. Matthias has been skiing on the World Cup circuit for just 3 years and last year he had his best showing, ranking 3rd in the standings for the Super G. He may have what it takes to get another medal in Sochi.

Bode Miller (USA) is next on the list at 5/1 odds. at 36 this is probably Bode's last Olympics and it hasn't been a fun one this far as he has finished 8th in the downhill and 6th in the super combined. He has won the season title in the Super G twice in his career, but none since 2007 and he has had finishes of 27th, 18th, 16th and 14th in the Super G World Cup standing the last 4 years. He has just 5 Super G race wins in his career, but none since 2007.  The decorated Olympic veteran has earned five medals throughout his impressive career and took silver in this event at the Vancouver Games.

Kjetil Jansrud (Norway) checks in at 8/1 odds. Jansrud has a bronze medal at these games, which he won in the downhill and he finished first in the downhill portion of the Super Combined, but he couldn't medal as he finished just 13th in the slalom portion of the event. The bronze that he won was his 2nd Olympic medal, winning the silver in the Gaint Slalom in the 2010 games at Vancouver. Jansrud won his first World Cup race in March 2012 on home snow at Kvitfjell; he made the podium in all three speed events over the weekend, capped off with a victory in the Super G.

Christof Innerhofer (Italy) is next at 12/1 odds. Christof has already medaled twice at these games, taking the silver in the downhill and the bronze in the Super Combined. He has one Super G World Cup win in his career (2012), but in the Super G World Cup standing he has finished 21st, 9th, 10th and 13th the last 4 years. Despite not having the great success in this event it is hard  to overlook the consistency he has shown in Sochi, which makes him a threat to reach the podium each time he touches the snow.

Carlo Janka (Switzerland) is next at 20/1 odds. Carlo comes in having finished 6th in the downhill and tied for 8th in the super combined. In 2013, Janka set a World Cup speed record in the downhill part of the super combined event in Wengen, Switzerland, reaching a speed of speed of 158.77 km/h (98.66 mph). He has the speed to compete in this event, but the warming temperatures will really hurt him here. Carlo has finished 28th and 27th in the Super G World Cup standing the last 2 years and he has yet to even reach the podium in a Super G event in his career.

Other Top Skiers In This Event... Patrick Kueng- Switzerland (25/1)... Ted Ligety- USA (25/1)... Didier Defago- Switzerland (28/1)... Erik Guay- Canada (28/1)... Peter Fill- Italy (28/1)... Adrian Theaux- France (33/1)... Georg Streitberger- Austria (33/1)... Max Franz- Austria (33/1)... Werner Heel- Italy (33/1).

Prediction: Not a great event to pick anyone cause I don't know what the conditions of the course are. i do know that they moved the start time up 1 hour to 1:am eastern time, because of expected warmer temperatures that are or their way to the slopes and that will slow the skiers down. Still I don't see this as an event that Bode Miller will medal at. I will look at Svindal to take the Gold, while the consistent Innerhofer will grab the silver and in a surprise i look for Ligety to grab the bronze. Please, though find out as much about the course as you can before plopping money down. The course is the wildcard in this race.
