2014 Belmont Stakes Contenders — California Chome

Triple Crown 2014: Examining California Chrome's Chance at History in Belmont

The 2014 Belmont Stakes is just a few days away and California Chrome will race for horse racing history. The 2014 Belmont Stakes Contenders are led by California Chrome, the clear-cut favorite to win the race on Saturday.

Victor Espinoza will once again ride California Chrome in this race. He was atop the champion horse for both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. A victory by California Chrome in this race at the Belmont Stakes would make it the 12th horse all-time to win the Triple Crown. Affirmed in 1978 was the last horse to accomplish the feat.

I'll Have Another was the last horse to seriously contend for the Triple Crown, having won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, but it did not run in the Belmont Stakes.

California Chrome has won six straight races overall, including four stakes events. A victory in the Belmont Stakes would make it just the third California-bred horse of all time to win, joining Comanche in 1893 and Africander in 1903.

There was some controversy over whether California Chrome would be able to wear the nasal strips it races with, but all of that was figured out. This is too special of a horse with a legitimate shot at winning the first Triple Crown in 36 years.
