2013 UTEP Miners Football Schedule, Preview

The 2013 UTEP Miners Schedule consist of just 5 home games and 7 road games. The have a very tough stretch to end the year, with 5 of their last 6 games away from home, including a game at Texas A&M. Their full schedule is listed below, but first let's preview the 2013 UTEP Miners.

Mike price is gone after 9 years with the Miners and in steps Sean Kugler, who was an OL coach in the NFL the last 6 years. The Miners went just 3-9 last year, but it may be hard for them to increase their win total this year, especially with just 5 starters back on defense and needing to replace QB Nick Lamaison as well.

The Biggest area of concern for Kugler this year will be on defense as just 17 of 28 lettermen return to a group that allowed 29.8 ppg last year. UTEP really lost allot of talent from this side of the ball as just 1 of their top 8 tacklers from last year are back. The DL returns four of it's top five players and seven overall with experience from last season, but they must improve on the 4.8 ypc they allowed last year. In the middle, LB AJ Ropat returns and he is the top returning tackler from a year ago. The secondary looks like it could be a strength on this defense, especially with the return of Richard Spencer, who was given a 6th year of eligibility. With so many holes im not sure how much improvement can be made on this side of the ball.

The addition of former Texas A&M quarterback Jameill Showers should be a significant upgrade at QB for UTEP. The Miners return their top 5 ball carriers from a year ago, including Nathan Jeffery, who had 897 yards and 7 TD's a year ago. The Miners will be relying on him allot. Jordan Leslie is the leading receiver as he caught 51 passes last year and overall they 7 of their top 8 pass catchers back from last year. The WR has some good depth to it. The OL has 3 starters back, but they have very little depth behind those players, so any key injuries could crush this unit. This team has some skill players that are very solid on offense and they should improve on last years 21.2 ppg they put up.

Last year the Miners had a rough non-conference schedule, but that is not the case their year, with both New Mexico Schools and Colorado state, replacing Ole Miss, Oklahoma Sate and Wisconsin. That should help them get their footing a little bit out the gate. The key to the Miners this year will be how well the new-look defense comes together, but still I don't expect much improvement on that side of the ball. The early schedule is not all that daunting, but their last 7 games include playing 5 of their last 6 games on the road, plus tough home games vs La Tech and Tulsa. I really don't see more than 4 or 5 wins from the Miners this year. Key Trends: 1-15 ATS as dogs of less than 20 points vs a sub .500 opponent with revenge... 0-9 ATS after playing Tulsa... 8-2 ATS last 10 vs New Mexico.
