D. Wayne Lukas trained colt Titletown Five did not earn enough points to qualify for the Kentucky Derby, but it will give it a go at the Preakness Stakes this weekend. The odds makers are far from enamored with the colt’s chances of winning the Triple Crown event, though, as it is drawing a 30 to 1 line in the latest 2013 Preakness Stakes Odds.

 

Titletown Five needed four opportunities to break its maiden, but it finally did last October in a seven furlongs run at Churchill Downs. The Tiznow (two time Breeders’ Cup Classic winner) sired horse took some extended time off after its initial victory to remove a bone chip in its knee and did not hit the track again until 2013.

 

Titletown Five finished second at the six furlongs Gazebo Stakes in early March, but it fared worse in graded stakes races. The colt placed a distant ninth at the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby and took fourth at the Grade 3 Derby Trail Stakes in late April.

 

Titletown Five’s pedigree would suggest the 1 3/16 miles Preakness Stakes is manageable. Lukas is, obviously, hoping the colt is a late bloomer — ready to defy the odds, its Preakness competition, and its own history.

 

Lukas’colt, piloted by French jockey Julien Leparouz, will start the Preakness Stakes from Post-3.

 

The 138^th Run for the Black-Eyed Susans takes place this Saturday, May 18^th at the Pimlico Race Track in Baltimore, Maryland. The Preakness Stakes is scheduled to get underway at 4:30pm ET; it will be broadcast live on the NBC Sports Network.
