The 2013 Old Dominion football schedule has 7 FCS teams and 5 FBS teams on it, with 3 of those FBS teams having gone to a bowl game last year. Their full schedule is listed below, but first lets preview the 2013 Old Dominion Monarchs.
ODU is in it's 6th year of existence and will be making their full jump to FBS status next year when they move to Conference USA. Last year he Monarchs did go 11-2, but they did not play on FBS team all year. This year they have just 5 FBS teams on their schedule and will go to a full FBS schedule next year.
Very hard to see how the Monarchs will stack up against FBS foes, but they do bring back 9 starters from an offense that averaged 45.2 ppg last year. This is a very experienced offense as all but one of their starters are upperclassmen. QB Taylor Heinicke is back to run the offense after throwing for 5000+ yards and 44 TD's last year and he has a plethora of skill players to get the ball to, as his top 3 RB's from last year return and his top 6 pass catchers are back as well. The OL does lose 1 starter, but still 4 return and all 4 are seniors. A very experienced unit. The Monarchs may not put up 45.2 ppg like last year, but this will still be a very fun offense to watch.
The defense for the Monarchs was not really all that good last year, especially for a team that went 11-2. ODU allowed 30.5 ppg and 420 yards per game last year and remember that was vs FCS opponents. This year just 6 starters ar back for this group and with the step up in competition they could struggle again. Like the Offense just one player on the defenses starting unit will be an underclassmen, giving them plenty of experience on this side of the ball. Im not sure this defense will improve on last years numbers, especially with the step in in competition, meaning that this team could be involved in many shootouts this year.
The Monarchs 5 FBS games are all on the road and out of the Group of ECU, Maryland, Idaho, North Carolina and Pittsburgh, they should be able to beat Idaho, while sweeping their 7 games vs FCS teams. Look for 8 wins from the monarchs this year.
