A late June release had Tom Brady as a second choice at +600 odds, but he is now a third pick, along with Adrian Peterson, at +900 odds. Sitting alone in second is 2011 MVP winner Aaron Rodgers at +800 odds. Rounding out the top 10 MVP favorites are Colin Kapernick (+1000), Drew Brees (+1000), Matt Ryan (+1400), Russell Wilson (+1400), Robert Griffin III (+1600), and Calvin Johnson (+2000). Of the 28 listed players, Jay Cutler, Josh Freeman, and Ray Rice are considered the least likely MVP winners with each individual drawing +6600 odds ($100 wins $6600).
Since 2000 a quarterback has won the MVP award 10 times (2003 co-MVPs Peyton Manning and Steve McNair) while a running back has garnered MVP honors four times. A wide receiver has not won an MVP award since the merger of the two leagues and the last defensive player to be named league MVP was Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor in 1986.
