Revolutionary was a slightly stronger consideration prior to yesterday’s post draw (fell from +700 to +900), but the colt is still one of the leading candidates to place in Saturday’s Triple Crown race. Much of that has to do with the three race winning streak it rides into the Derby.

 

Revolutionary needed four attempts to break his maiden, but since doing so on December 28^th, the colt earned first place in both the Grade 3 Withers Stakes (2/2/13) and the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby (3/30/13).

 

Revolutionary was slow out of the gate in each of those outings, but that could play into veteran jockey Calvin Borel's unorthodox racing style.

 

Borel is known for his unusual affinity for the rail, a tack he will, no doubt, employ with the post three jump (i.e. drop back, get to the rail, make a late move). Borel also knows his way around Churchill Downs better than any of his contemporaries. Borel owns three Kentucky wins (2007 Street Sense, 2009 Mine That Bird, 2010 Super Saver) and he teamed with Pletcher in 2010 when the pair captured the Run for the Roses with Super Saver.
