Lawyer Ron sired Itsmyluckyday will look to make it one for his Trilogy Stables owners and trainer Eddie Plesa Jr. tomorrow when he runs in the 139th version of the Kentucky Derby. A veteran of 10 races, Itsmyluckyday is one of a handful of middling 2013 Kentucky Derby Contenders at +1400 moneyline odds ($100 wins $1400); however, some believe the colt possessing the perfect sort of stalking style that often plays well at Churchill Downs.
It took Itsmyluckyday two shots to break his maiden, but his handlers opened the flood gates following his initial victory in June of last year. The dark bay colt went on to compete in five more 2012 races, scoring two wins as well as third, fourth, and sixth place finishes.
Itsmyluckyday has enjoyed a lighter schedule this year, racing only in the Gulfstream Park Derby, Holy Bull Stakes (G3), and Florida Derby (G1). The horse took first in the Gulfstream Park Derby as well as the Holy Bull Stakes, but he surrender a late lead to Derby favorite Orb in the Florida Derby and ended up with a second place finish.
Itsmyluckyday produced one of the better Beyer ratings of this year Derby field, topping with a 104 in the Holy Bull Stakes, and he possesses good pace speed; however, stamina could prove a problem tomorrow.
Should one of the speed horses like Falling Sky or Goldencents set too quick a pace, Itsmyluckyday, who likes to stalk the pace, may not have enough left for the final furlong.
Tomorrow’s 139th running of the Kentucky Derby will be broadcast live on NBC. Coverage of the 10 furlongs (1 ¼ miles) event is scheduled to begin at 4:00pm ET; post time is set for 6:24pm ET.
