Trainer Doug O’Neill won his first Kentucky Derby last year with I’ll Have Another, but he would, no doubt, like to have another Run for the Roses victory this year. According to the latest odds, he stands a decent chance with Goldencents. The colt, which is considered one of the stronger 2013 Kentucky Derby Contenders, is drawing +800 moneyline odds ($100 wins $800) to win 139thKentucky Derby.
Goldencents will make his seventh career start when he jumps from Post No. 8 tomorrow evening. A product of Into Mischief and Golden Works, Goldencents broke his maiden last September and has since tallied five graded stakes races. The colt took first in three of those events, including the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on April 6th.
While there are some questions about the level of competition Goldencents has faced, there is little doubt about his speed (105 Beyer rating at the Santa Anita Derby). That could pose a problem for him tomorrow, though, should first time Derby jockey Kevin Krigger fail to pace him properly.
Krigger, who has been aboard the colt in all six of its starts, will need to leave something in Goldencents tank for the last quarter mile as there are some question marks about his ability to handle the increased distance.
The 2013 Kentucky Derby is scheduled to get underway at approximately 6:24pm ET tomorrow (Saturday, May 4
th); the race will be broadcast live on NBC. The
Kentucky Derby, a Grade 1, 10 furlongs (1 ¼ miles) event, is the first and most prestigious of the Triple Crown races (Preakness Stakes, Belmont Stakes).
