2012 British Open Results and Payouts

The 2012 British Open did not go according to plan, but few are complaining as Ernie Els secured his second Claret Jug and fourth major championship after shooting a two under par 68 on the final day to finish seven under for the tournament. 2012 British Open Results saw the Big Easy overtake Australia’s Adam Scott, who entered the fourth round as a -150 moneyline favorite to win the Open Championship, Graeme McDowell, Tiger Woods, and Brandt Snedeker all of whom collapsed under Sunday’s pressure. Payouts for Els backers were significant as his victory returned $3050 for every $100 wagered.

Despite Ernie Els ninth place finish at the U.S. Open last month, few saw the South African as a viable pick to win the 141st Open Championship. After all, Els had not won a PGA or European Tour event since 2010, and his last major title came back in 2002 when he won his first British Open at Muirfield.

Els defied expectations, though, as his steady play (67, 70, 68, 68) allowed him to take advantage of some big moment jitters from those at the top of the leaderboard. Scott had a commanding lead coming into today, sitting at 11 under through three rounds after posting scores of 64, 67, and 68, but he fell apart this morning and hit the clubhouse with a five over par 75.

Scott was not alone as Woods, Snedeker, and McDowell all experienced difficulty navigating their final 18 at the Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club. Woods finished the day with a three over 73 while Snedeker and McDowell shot four and five over par for the round, respectively.

Woods’ British Open effort somewhat mirrored his performance at the U.S. Open. Tiger looked like his former self in the first two rounds of each tournament, but he was ordinary to bad, relatively speaking, over the final two days of action at the two events. Still, his top five Open Championship finish paid rather handsomely for those willing to go that route. Woods earned his backers $145 for every $100 wagered on a top five result and he returned $100 for every $160 wagered on a top 10 finish.

Woods also won his head to head pairing with Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy, and Luke Donald at The Greek.com. The offshore book offered Tiger at -120 odds against Westwood, -125 odds against Donald, and -135 odds against Mclroy.
