After spending most part of the
2008/2009 offseason trying to find a way to beat the Boston Celtics the
Cavaliers knows that they needed a major presence in the block to beat
Dwight Howard and the Magic team in the 2009/2010 season.
Is Shaquille O'Neal the best piece for the Cavs? Obviously we don't
know yet but in my opinion it looks like a good trade. First of all
Shaq will play now in a slower pace team (note that the Suns averaged
almost more 10 possessions than the Cavs) and this might help him as he
won't need constantly to run the court up and down, instead in a more
half court offensive scheme he will be relatively healthy for the
Playoffs.
The Cavs were one of the "worst" teams of the league in terms of
points in the paint per game because true be told they didn't have a
big man that could dominate in the paint. Zydrunas Ilgauskas loves to
shoot mid range jump shots; Ben Wallace was insignificant offensively;
Varejao can't create his own shot and even veteran Joe Smith is more a
perimeter oriented big man. For the first time in a long time the Cavs
will have a player that demands double teams on him other than Lebron
James.
Also let's not forget that although Shaq is making $21 million next
season this is the final year of his contract so the Cavs will have
some cap salary in the following season to sign a major free agent. What your thoughts guys?
