It has been since The Tour Championship and The Ryder Cup last September that I spoke about much golf with any of you here in the Forum - but now another season is underway and it's time to tee off.. and Tiger Woods is joining us this week for just his second time playing in 18-months!
For those of you that have followed my golf plays here at Pregame, you know that I started off three years ago with an excellent season, a season that saw us hit over 70% of our match ups in The Major Championships and close out 12-units to the positive. In year two we finished the season up 6-units, which is great, but mid season we were ahead by as many as 18-units, only to struggle down the home stretch. Last year was a disappointment. We finished pretty strong and nailed The British Open, picking Henrik Stenson to win at 28-1 but the early season set us back so much that the end result was being down over 10-units for the season.
This year we are expecting a big bounce back and we get started on Thursday with The Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, along with Tiger.
For those of you that are new to betting golf and/or new to my approach, I play 95% Head to Head Match Ups for the entire tournament. I rarely do individual round match ups and only for The Majors, pretty much, do I recommend some future plays on "to win" the tournament. My feeling on picking a winner outside of The Majors, is it is very much of a crap shoot, trying to pick one guy out of 150. I understand that hitting one winner at 60-1 might make for a whole season but I feel our chances are much better trying to pick a winner between just two players that the books post as an individual head to head match up. In addition, I like to play the match ups for the whole tournament rather than a single round because I feel this equates to betting just an individual quarter of a football game rather than betting the whole game. My handicap of an event and player, I feel is more likely to unfold over 4-days of golf rather than one afternoon. Week in and week out on The Tour, I typically release anywhere from 3-to-8 head to head plays.
My style for handicapping golf is essentially "Horses for Courses." I have been playing fantasy golf contests for 20-years and have come to be very familiar with all of the golf courses in the PGA Tour rotation along with Major Championship venues. I like to break down the golf course and what skill sets are likely to have the most success at a particular course and then match that criteria with the appropriate player(s). I use both quantitative and qualitative analysis in my handicapping of any event. When I find a head to head match up where I see an edge, where I believe one player fits the course better than his opponent, this is how I make it a play. Certainly it is not exactly that simple as there are other factors like a player's current form, a player's health, weather, etc... and then of course, there is the price, but again, from a basic standpoint, this is how I fundamentally begin to make my selections each week.
In my Annual Subscription for golf, you will get the plays for the tournaments I am playing myself, which usually amounts to about 26-events between now and The Tour Championship in September. I provide the plays along with a written analysis of the event itself and of the individual match up(s) we are playing.
If you are ready to play golf this 2017 PGA Tour Season, then come on in!
