Monday's Value Plays
BATTERS
Studs to Start
Ryan Braun, Brewers vs. Pirates ($97,136)
Ryan Braun owns certain pitchers. Today’s matchup is one of those cases. He is 14 for 39 with 4 home runs, 8 RBI and a .444 on-base percentage against Wandy Rodriguez. Enough said.
Value Plays
Carlos Pena, Astros vs. Yankees ($43,472)
Despite the fact I will advocate for Pettitte later, Pena has done well against the Yankees lefty. He owns a .326 batting average in 43 at-bats with 6 homers and 11 RBI in his career against Andy Pettitte. Not bad for a small priced guy.
Omar Infante, Tigers vs. Twins ($67,392)
Looking for a small play today that can give you some extra points? Look no further then Infante, who is 15 for 30 with 3 RBI against Mike Pelfrey. Not a bad ratio to play when trying to find those extra points.
Eric Hosmer, Royals vs. Indians ($49,296)
Hosmer has turned it on of late and will now enjoy a matchup against a pitcher he seems to do well against. He is 5 for 8 with 2 home runs against Ubaldo Jimenez and should be a very popular pick to click tonight.
Bench
Nick Swisher, Indians vs. Royals ($71,968)
While Swisher has fit in well for his new club, he should be avoided tonight, as he is 2 for 13 with 5 strikeouts against Wade Davis. There are plenty of other options to play, so avoid the switch hitter.
Alex Gonzalez, Brewers vs. Pirates ($49,504)
With all of the injuries to the Brewers Alex Gonzalez has been receiving significant playing time. However, he should be avoided in all formats, as he is 2 for 23 with 6 strikeouts during his career against Wandy Rodriguez. Not the best ratio, so please avoid, especially since he is banged up a bit as well.
Troy Tulowitzki, Rockies vs. Dodgers ($85,280)
Tulo may miss this game regardless with an injury, but if he somehow talks his way into tonight’s lineup, he should be avoided. He is 4 for 32 with 11 strikeouts against Ted Lilly, who is expected to start for the Dodgers. Avoid playing him.
PITCHERS
Studs to Start
Matt Harvey, Mets vs. Marlins $152,960)
I will continue to start Harvey every chance I get. Despite not having his best stuff last week against the Dodgers, Harvey still had a quality start, with plenty of strikeouts, and the Mets won the game. Now he faces a Marlins team that lacks much punch outside of Giancarlo Stanton. I love this matchup for big points in all formats.
Andy Pettitte, Yankees vs. Astros ($116,960)
It is amazing how solid Pettitte has been this season for the Yankees. His ERA is staggering in the 2’s and given the fact he faces a weak-hitting lineup in the Astros makes this a stellar play. He should be able to go deep into the game, rack up the strikeouts and be pitching from in front. All the key ingredients to a solid fantasy night.
Jeff Samardzija, Cubs vs. Padres ($104,480)
Love this matchup. Tons of K’s, low amount of runs against, run support against a weak pitcher. Much like Pettitte, Samardzija should be golden today. Should get some more points with strikeouts then Andy, but more of a risk to surrender some runs. Solid play any way you look at it.
Value Plays
Ted Lilly, Dodgers vs. Rockies ($93,920)
Lilly was solid in his return to the hill for his 2013 debut against the Mets last week and pitching at home, he should be able to provide some low end value today against the Rockies. The Dodgers should score plenty against Tyler Chatwood, so he should be pitching with a lead. If that is the case he can be more aggressive and let his defense make plays behind him. Like this play a lot.
Bench
Mat Latos, Reds vs. Cardinals ($105,280)
Latos continues to be a rock for the Reds, despite only having one win on the year. His ERA of just over 2.00 is stellar, but he may struggle on the road against the Cardinals. They seem to be hitting very well right now despite the struggles of David Freese and the injury to Matt Adams. Their lineup remains one of the deepest in MLB and given the other solid options today, Latos may be a tad risky.
Wandy Rodriguez, Pirates vs. Brewers ($84,480)
Yes Wandy is off to a sensational start for the Pirates, but given his lackluster history against the Brewers (8-8 record, 1.40+ WHIP), and his history against their player Ryan Braun as discussed earlier, this is not the right play for tonight. Safer options exist and the Pirates may struggle to provide him much support given they are going against Yovani Gallardo.
