I've spent a fair amount of time this winter working with a friend of mine on a baseball handicapping system. He's the real mathematician; I'm the armchair sabermetrician. I'm going to post picks on the site throughout the year as we test it over the season - then depending on how it does, we'll either fix it, forget it, or sell some picks, but only after a year of verified results, for better or for worse.
Unfortunately, real life prevented us from finishing the calculations before opening day kicks off (I've got about 6 more hours of work to do, though I've been up since 7:00 trying to finish before Stl/Chi gets rolling, but that ain't happening). I'm going to post futures picks before each team involved starts play, though, for verification purposes (i.e. tomorrow for everyone other than the Cards & Cubs). But the one thing I do know at this point is that there is an OVER recommendation on the Cardinals (my book has them at 87.5). No play on the Cubs. I think they're a little worse than the 83 I have available, but not enough to bet them (I have them at 80 wins, subject to minor revision).
Other futures and game picks starting tomorrow. Best of luck to everyone's MLB season.
