The Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants will butt heads today in a regular season finale that does not have near as much at stake as most envisioned back in August. Start time in this afternoon’s anticlimactic NFL Picks meeting between the two longtime rivals is set for 1:00pm ET at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey; the game will be televised live on FOX. The latest Eagles vs. Giants NFL Odds have New York listed as a -7 against the spread home favorite and the Over/Under set at 46 points.
The Eagles have absolutely nothing at stake in today’s game, but they are at least three things that result in a strong effort from the league’s most disappointing team.
First, this game is, in all probability, Andy Reid’s last as head coach in Philadelphia. There are, no doubt, are good number of players on the team who would like to send Reid out a winner.
Second, it is a rivalry game, and even though Philly is out of the playoff picture, New York is not. The Eagles would love nothing more than to put the final nail in the Giants postseason coffin.
Finally, today is an audition for Michael Vick. Vick, who has not played since a November 11th loss to the Cowboys (concussion) has stated he will not restructure his contract in order to stay with the Eagles, which means there are a number of teams that could be interested in signing the Virginia Tech product provided he still has something to offer.
And, of course, there is New York’s side to consider in all this. The Giants looked as though they would cruise to an NFC East title after their 6-2 start, but a 2-5 second half has effectively crushed their division hopes. It has all but eliminated their playoff aspirations as well. The Giants need a small miracle in order to secure a postseason berth at this point and one would figure they will carry more feelings of disappointment rather than excitement onto the field today.
