NCAA Basketball Picks Coastal Carolina Chanticleers vs Virginia Cavaliers

NCAA basketball on Friday night and we will see the Virginia Cavaliers take on the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament, which is being played at PNC Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina. The game has a start time of 9:25 pm (Eastern) and will be televised on TBS. Vegas odds have the Cavaliers listed as 21.5 point favorites, while the total sits at 122.

Stat Pack:  The Chanticleers grabbed an automatic bid by winning the Big South tournament. CC comes in 21-12 on the year and have won 5 in a row. The average a modest 72.7 ppg on the year, but they are a poor shooting team as they rank 203rd in shooting overall (43.8%), 228th in 3 point shooting (33.4%) and 193rd in FT shooting (69.4%). The offense is led by Elijah Wilson, who averages 16.1 ppg, while Warren Gillis (14.8 ppg) and Josh Cameron (14.1 ppg) also average in double figures for the Chanticleers. This team is a bit more solid on the defensive end as they rank 29th in defensive FG% (40.0%) and 56th at defending the arc (31.8%), while allowing just 68.4 ppg on the year.

What a year Virginia had as the won the ACC regular season title and then parlayed that into winning the ACC tournament as well. The Cavs come in at 28-6 overall and that includes a prefect 6-0 on neutral courts. The Cavs are led by an amazing defense that ranks 1st in the nation in points allowed (55.3 ppg), 9th in defensive FG% overall (38.5%) and 60th in 3 point defense (31.9%). Offensively this s not a very good team as they rank 288th in scoring (65.9 ppg), but they are a decent shooting team, hitting 45.2% of their shots overall (121st) and 36.4% of their shots from long range (88th). They are 282nd in free throw shooting (66.4%). The offense is led by Malcolm Brogdon, who averages 12.7 ppg, while long range shooter, Joe Harris, scores 11.7 ppg. They are the only 2 to average in double figures for the Cavs.

Pick: This game really could be a 69-47 type game and that has me looking at the under. Virginia has played great defense this year and while CC does average 72.7 ppg, they do not shoot the ball very well and Virginia allows just 38.5% shooting on the year, while allowing just 55.3 ppg in the process. On offense the Cavs will look to slow the pace and that has resulted in them scoring just 65.9 ppg on the year overall and 63.3 ppg away from home. They do not look to score first and will be taking on a CC team that has been playing great defense of late, allowing just 60.6 ppg in their last 5 games. The Cavs will most likely be up big in the second half of this game and they should lead to them being even slower than they already are. Both teams are playing good defense, the Cavs don't score a lot and the Chanticleers can't shoot. No more than 116 points in this one.
