Free Analysis: When the Boston Red Sox hosted the Los Angeles Angels last week, a three-game sweep effectively ended Boston’s season. It also led to the front office pulling the trigger on a deal that sent Josh Beckett, Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Nick Punto across the country to the Los Angeles Dodgers, where they are currently stealing headlines from the Angels. The Red Sox, though, haven't lost in Anaheim since dropping the first two games of their 2009 AL division series there en route to being swept in their most recent playoff appearance. Boston won't have David Ortiz on this 9 game trip after the designated hitter went back on the disabled list Monday, although he hopes to return this season after getting an injection for his strained right Achilles. Clay Buchholz had a rare misstep against Los Angeles last week, getting tagged for seven runs on 12 hits in 5 1/3 innings to suffer the loss.The right-hander is trying to bounce back after that rocky outing. He had been 7-1 with a 2.19 ERA in his previous 12 starts before getting roughed up by the Angels, and he's 4-1 with a 2.38 ERA in his last six road starts. The Angels needed that Fenway Park sweep, last week, to stay alive in the American League wild card race but totaled seven runs in dropping two of three at the Detroit Tigers over the weekend. That offense is expected to get a boost Tuesday when Albert Pujols returns after missing nearly a week with right calf inflammation. The Angels have lost 7 of their last 9 at home, with Weaver suffering two of those defeats. The right-hander was 14-1 with a 1.45 ERA in his previous 21 outings in Anaheim before his back-to-back home losses. His most recent performance there - he allowed nine runs in three-plus innings Aug. 17 against Tampa Bay - looks like an extreme aberration. Weaver has been sharp against Boston at home, posting a 1.80 ERA in seven starts including postseason while allowing two runs or fewer in each. Pitching overall has been a problem for the Halos as their 5.53 team ERA since the All-Star break is the worst mark in the majors. The bullpen has put up a 6.08 mark in that period.
Free Pick: Despite losing some key players the Sox offense has been hot of late, averaging 5.4 rpg in their last 10 games, while their staff has fallen apart, allowing 5.7 rpg over the same stretch. Jered Weaver has been tough at home with a 2.36 ERA, but his home starts have still averaged 9 rpg that to an offense tat has given him 5.9 rpg worth of support on his home field. The Angels have been with out Pujols for for a few games of late, but this offense just has so many weapons and they come in averaging 4.7 rpg in their last 10 games. The LA staff has been hard as a whole of late as they have allowed 6.7 rpg in their last 10 games. This one should easily go OVER 7 runs.
