Analysis: Cincinnati (45-33) recorded 10 hits and stranded 11 runners while losing for the fourth time in five contests last night. Derrick Robinson had four hits and Joey Votto homered for the Reds, who chased starter Tommy Milone after 4 2-3 innings but did little against Oakland's bullpen. Votto is batting .400 (14 for 35) with three homers and five RBIs in nine games, while Robinson has hit .346 in his last seven. Teammate Jay Bruce hit .340 with eight homers in 11 games before he went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts Tuesday. He's 4 for 32 without a home run and has fanned 13 times against AL opponents this season. Cincinnati will be without star second baseman Brandon Phillips, who was placed on the paternity list and will rejoin the club Friday against Texas. Homer Bailey deserved a better fate than a no-decision following his two-run, eight-strikeout performance in six innings against Pittsburgh on Thursday. The 27-year-old dazzled in his lone career effort versus Oakland, allowing one run on two hits in seven innings to pick up the win. Bailey has struggled away from home, posting a 2-4 mark with a 4.20 ERA.
The A's look for a fifth consecutive home victory over an NL opponent in the finale of their brief set with the Cincinnati Reds today. Oakland (45-34) lost seven of 10 and was coming off a 2-5 trip when it broke out for a 7-3 win over Cincinnati on Tuesday. Third baseman Josh Donaldson hit a two-run homer, catcher Stephen Vogt recorded his first career RBI and five relievers held the Reds (45-33) to four hits over 4 1-3 scoreless innings. Oakland has won 15 of 20 interleague contests and has outscored its NL foes 47-25 while going 6-2 this season. The A's, who face St. Louis and the Chicago Cubs on the homestand, have won 18 of 24 interleague games at the Coliseum. AJ Griffin is looking to notch his first win since May 25. The 25-year-old owns an 0-3 mark with a 4.02 ERA during his last five starts. Griffin, who has never faced the Reds in his young career, permitted two runs on three hits in 5 1/3 innings to take a no-decision against Texas on Thursday.
Pick: Going with the A's in this one. This tea m has been very good at home in interleague play and I expect it to continue tonight. The Reds will be without Phillips for this one and Jay Bruce has struggled mightily in interleague play this year. AJ Griffin has pitched well at home, with the A's going 4-2 in his home starts and he has posted a 3.49 ERA in this starts. Home Bailey is just 2-4 on the road with a 4.20 ERA and the Reds are just 2-5 in his road starts. AJ is 1-4 with a 4.78 ERA in day starts, but Bailey is 1-3 with a 4.89 ERA in his days starts, so no advantage for either team there. I loook for the A's to continue their solid interleague play with a win in this one
