Betting Odds
Boston -107
New York -103
Over/ Under: 7 O -125
Friday nights game went to 19 innings before the Sox pulled it out and then they followed that up with an 8-4 beatdown of the Yanks yesterday. The Sox are now 4-1 on the year, while the Yanks have fallen to 1-4. Boston is 4th in the league in scoring at 6 rpg and 8th in ERA at 2.33. For the yanks they are 14th in scoring at 3.4 rpg, while they are 16th in ERA, which is at 3.44.
A look at some tends for this game show us that Boston is 25-11 in their last 36 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400 and 45-21 in Clay's last 66 road starts, but also just 4-9 in his last 13 starts vs the AL East. The Yankees have 49-20 in their last 69 games after losing the first 2 games of a series and 7-3 in Tanaka's last 10 home starts, but just 1-4 in his last 5 starts vs the AL East gone We also note that the Over is 8-2 the last 8 games in the series.
Getting the ball tonight for the Red Sox will be Clay Buchholz, who won his only start of the year so far by beating the Phils 8-0, in a game he allowed just 3 hits in 7 innings of work in. Clay struggled last year, going 8-11 with a 5.34 ERA, after going 12-1 with a 1.74 ERA in 2013. Clay is just 5-7 with a 5.64 ERA in 15 career starts vs the Yanks, but is 4-3 with a 4.05 ERA in 7 career starts in this park.
Getting the ball for the Yankees will tonight right-hander Masahiro Tanaka, who allowed 5 hits and 4 ER's in just 4 innings of a 6-1 opening day loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. Tanaka faced the Sox 3 times last year and was 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA in those starts, while in his brief career has pitched well overall in this part, posting a 6-3 mark and a 2.44 ERA in 11 starts here.
Pick: I will be going with the Over here. The first 2 in this series has gone over and I don't see why it can't happen tonight as well. Tanaka did not look right in his first game vs the Blue Jays and now he will take on a team that he struggled with last year. Clay Buchholz had a nice opening win vs the Phils, but that was vs a much weaker offense than the one he will face tonight and he does have a career 4.05 ERA in this park. & is a low number and while Tanaka has pitched well in this park that was last year and he has not looked all that good coming off of surgery. I see both teams getting to these starters early.
