139th Preakness Stakes Post Positions

On Saturday, the second leg of the Triple Crown takes place in the 139th Preakness Stakes. The race is scheduled for a 6:20 p.m. EST start time and it will be televised nationally on NBC. California Chrome, winner of the Kentucky Derby, will look to break through and win the second leg of the Triple Crown. The official Preakness Stakes Post Positions are listed below as well.

The post positions have been made official and California Chrome will begin the race from the third position. Only 10 horses will be running in this year's Preakness Stakes as the post positions were announced Wednesday evening.

California Chrome is the clear cut favorite to win the race, based on it being the second leg of the Triple Crown. The "Run for the Black-Eyed Susans" is held on the third Saturday in May and is only trumped by the Kentucky Derby in attendance for North American stakes races. The 139th Preakness Stakes is scheduled to take place on May 17, 2014 at Pimlico in Baltimore, Maryland.

Preakness Facts: Opening day at Pimlico Race Course in 1870 featured the Dinner Party Stakes that was won by a horse named Preakness. In the racetrack's spring meet of 1873, the 3-year-old stakes race was named after him and the rest is history. The first official Preakness was won by Survivor with a 10 length cushion between him and second place. This record win was not topped until 2004 when Smarty Jones took home the title by an amazing 11 lengths.

Triple Crown Winners (Official List): Sir Barton (1919), Gallant Fox (1930), Omaha (1935), War Admiral (1937), Whirlaway (1941), Count Fleet (1943), Assault (1946), Citation (1948), Secretariat (1973), Seattle Slew (1977) and Affirmed (1978).
