The Oakland Athletics take on the Seattle Mariners tonight in Major League Baseball action. The game is scheduled for a 10:05 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on MLB.tv. Currently the odds for the game have Oakland as a home favorite to win tonight.
The Seattle Mariners have won all three of their games to open the season, sweeping the Los Angeles Angels on the road. That road trip continues tonight when they take on the Oakland Athletics in a late game out west. Seattle hasn't started a season 3-0 since 1995 and their first season-opening sweep in nearly 30 years. Oakland lost two of their first three games to open the 2014 campaign and are looking to turn that around.
The Mariners will be sending Roenis Elias to the hill tonight to make his Major League debut. If the Mariners continue to score runs Elias will have a lot of support in this game tonight. Seattle out-scored the Angels 26-8 in their three-game sweep. Newcomer Robinson Cano collected five hits in 11 at bats during those opening three games and also drew four walks. Going deep for the Mariners in those three games were Corey Hart, Justin Smoke and catcher Mike Zunino, all of whom will need to hit well this season if the Mariners are going to succeed.
Oakland closer Jim Johnson is taking the blame for the Athletics dropping a pair of games as he blew a couple of saves. The Athletics have just 10 runs in their three games so far, being shutout in their opener. Alberto Callaspo has the only home run for the As and is tied with two runs batted in with Brandon Moss, Jed Lowrie and Yeonis Cespedes who also have driven in a couple of runs. Josh Donaldson and Josh Reddick are also big bats in the Athletics lineup that hasn't been able to get it going yet.
The Athletics will send Jesse Chavez to the mound tonight. Last year he was 2-4 with a 3.92 ERA and one save in 35 relief appearances.
Elias and Chavez should have a bit of an advantage tonight. Chavez has allowed Mariners to hit .250 against him in 24 career plate appearances. We don't expect either team to be comfortable with these pitchers, but we'll give the edge to Elias who has not thrown against any current Athletic. Plus Seattle is red hot at the plate, so we're going to back them tonight.
