I know, most of you are thinking NBA right? 'Not even close. This post references culture. Since we are in a transition period ( as far as I'm concerned) regarding sports wagering between basketball and football, I thought this subject may be of interest. I hope it is, especially to you young in's that (through no fault of your own) lack experience in this very difficult game of handicapping sports.
I am a professional poker player by trade. No, I'm not in Phil Ivey or Daniel Negreanu's class but I make a living grinding out sit and go's and tournaments on a variety of sites and live play here in Reno, Nevada. I play the big live tournaments when they come to town. Occasionally, I will travel to Vegas or LA for a tourney if I'm on a bit of a "heater". I consider myself very fortunate at 61 years of age to decide what time I will finish playing and what time I will get get up the next day.
In my youth, I played in the three "major" sports. I was blessed with good hands and could catch any football thrown close to me. I could also hit the curve ball in baseball. From countless hours of practice, I was deadly from the top of the key and the perimeter on basketball jump shots. Sadly, I was 5'11" and had "white man's disease". I think my vertical leap was like 18"... and so went my aspirations of being a pro athlete! The transition from being a player to wagering on sports was a natural one for me.
As a young man, I realized that eastern culture had a very different outlook regarding those that have "aged". Older people in the east are held in high esteem for their experience and wisdom. By and large, that is not so here in the west. Even here at PG I have been referred to as a "dinosaur" and an "old fart". While I understand the attitude of youth, there may be something to learn from "old farts" like me.
In live poker games, I am instantly stereotyped in every game I sit down in. This is a huge advantage which I exercise in each and every game I play. I am immediately classified as the tight player that will never raise without the nuts. Unfortunately, Reno is the "Biggest Little City in the World" even to this day. Most of the regulars here in town know me and understand how I play so my advantage is regulated to the weekend tourist that comes to town to give up his/her hard earned cash.
The lesson from poker to sports betting is constant. Those with more experience usually hold an edge. I suggest the next time the urge is felt to classify someone regarding their capabilities or their behavior based on appearance or age you take a step back. Allow the person to confirm or deny your pre-judgement based on their action.
Words of wisdom from your "old" pal coddfish.....
