You're right that "Jets" and "lock" should never be used in the same sentence, but Rex Ryan has only gone below .500 once and that was 6-10 in 2012 with Tony Sparano calling plays for the first time in his career, Tebow coming in randomly to run plays alongside Sanchez (as well as lining up at fullback wtf???), and a WR core of Kerley, rookie Stephen Hill, and Chaz friggin Schilens (Santonio was lost for the season like week 3). Last years team was BAD and he pulled out 8-8 when I thought they were going 6-10.
This is now likely Rex's 2nd best roster since he's been here (2010 they were legit w Revis, Cro, Santonio, Braylon, LT, etc) with an eh division--2 games against the Bills and below average Miami--and I would say an average schedule...not overly tough but definitely not a cake walk. Also, who knows how much it will mean, but every beat writer and person around the team is saying they are the most tight-knit Jets team they've seen in years, and they have a lot of swagger. There's no Sanchez or QB controversy (everyone knows Geno is starting and Vick should only play if the season is going down the tubes), there are no bad apples like Santonio Holmes, and there is no Rex's head on the chopping block as much as in the past, so past distratction are gone.
My opinion is that 7-9 is worst case scenario, 8-8 wouldn't surprise me, 9-7 is doable. You never know in the nfl, and I can't wait to see what happens. Looking forward to hearing you and Chris' take--I check out againstthenumber.com reguarly.
