Good morning guys. I am certain everyone is saying what the hell is up with Spartan? Is he knocking down some cups of something other than coffee this early monday morning? What is morning coffee with Spartan? Well, it is no big deal fellas. Here is the story. I was on the phone last week with RJ and Tom and I mentioned that I often meet with a bunch of buddies for breakfast and we just sit around and discuss the sports topics of the day. Frankly we do everything humanly possible to avoid politics because none of us are particularly morning people and that is no way to begin a day. Sports is the dominant subject. Pretty much as simple as that. I will even admit, as my good buddy and forum poster Richard Mayfield knows I do not even drink coffee, and Richard has known me since 1980. The purpose here is pretty straight forward. Just imagine sitting around a big round table with your buddies exchanging thoughts on the weekends sporting events. You can either sit there nodding or engage. I will offer up some personal observations and my own thoughts and if you would like to chime in feel free. This is NOT about selling anything guys. This is just an informal exchange of topics that are of current interest.
First off it is a kind of sad day for us Packers fans. Old news now but yes, losing Jordy Nelson is a blow. There is no other way to view it. I have been a fan of Jordy since his days at Kansas State. You simply cannot lose a wide out the caliber of Jordy Nelson and not miss a beat. With that being said it is the motto in the league, next man up. Pressure is certainly doubled up on young Mr Adams and I am certain that Ted Thompson will be checking the waiver wires for some depth. Preseason injuries and just a part of the deal guys, as much as we all despise them. Seems such a waste but some of these games are needed no two ways about it. Hell I remember when they played six of these preseason games. Here is the scary part. We have already seen plenty of key players go down and week 3 coming up is the most dangerous one. This weekend is the game where the clubs will be playing the starters for the longest periods. Lets just hope most teams do not get hammered with key losses.
Another thing is regarding baseball and fan safety. Sounds like a rash of injuries this weekend from ball entering the stands. I do not think it is knee jerk reaction to say the time has arrived for owners to take steps to increase safety. The nets need to be expanded in my view. I would say it is not a matter of if, but when we witness a major injury to a fan. I was at the Marlins and Cards game a week or so back and was four rows behind the Marlins dugout and witnessed what was almost a bad deal. A ball just missed drilling a young woman in the skull. BUT, it is important also to note that she was totally oblivious as she was sitting there texting. Common sense must enter into things as well. Nothing wrong with some old fashioned awareness. I looked around during the game and at all times at least 30% of the fans were screwing around with their phones.
Finally, a plea for prayers. I saw where Indy car driver Justin Wilson is in a coma this morning. Another car hit the wall and a piece of debris struck Justin in the head as he passed the scene. Purely a 100% freak thing. Wrong place at the wrong time. Now a promising young life is in real danger and it is sad. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers if you are so inclined. Life is indeed just not fair sometimes and this is a classic example.
Okay, that is it. Really. Feel free to chime in with any thoughts you care to share. I cannot promise I will always be able to immediately respond personally. But other forum family members might. I honestly don't sit by my computer all day guys. Have things to do. But I do carry my phone with me at all times and will always respond in as timely a manner as possible. I do have one personal plea, as this evolves I would like to keep it clear of politics. We all get enough of that shoved down our throats on a daily basis. I am not Sean Hannity or Bill O'Reilly I am Steve, (Spartan), and here to talk just about anything else.
Enjoy your monday guys and lets get this new week off to a positive beginning.
