in terms of short term losing runs i never change my units bet (though my money management method dictates the dollar amount of unit is adjusted to bankroll). depending on the severity of my run and in WHAT SPECIFIC AREA i will do the following, in this order.
if it is only one sport i am taking the beating in
1. at whatever point i am at (depending on sport and amount of plays per day) i will finish out the week doing exactly the same wagering i was doing going into it. I use one week cutoffs for all of my sports to spot measure myself
2. at the end of the week period i will lay off that particular section for two days or so and come back with a clear head and not look back at the last week of graded wagers (this is key to stepping back, because if you come back in and immediately count up your units lost recently you have effectively buried your head right back into the quicksand)
3. if the losses continue to pile i will reevaluate the handicapping to see if what i had been using is no longer useful or capable of putting me in a good position to win and limit the number of plays per day but not the unit size until i have reestablished a proper working method
if it is all sports (heaven forbid)
1. regardless of where i am i stop everything and shut down.
2. after 2 days rest i come back and "dry cap" for three days on the sports i feel i have the best edge on
3. if that goes well i resume betting with original unit size and expand quantity of plays gradually
the psychological paper please post if you can find it. i have no doubt it is true. because when you win you look at they money won, but your original investment always feels like it was yours to begin with (even though we stress to regard that money wagered as already gone once its put down, we never really do that) so in essence you only win 100, but when you lose its 200 in the mindset. training that line of thinking out may be the most difficult thing for anyone to accomplish
great topic Lloyd, as there are lots of ways people handle losing, and most of them are not conducive to getting back to winning
