Attended the Padres/Dodgers game yesterday at Camelback Ranch. The difference between actually being at a game and what was reported is amazing. In the early innings of the game there was a line drive hit by Jose Uribe between Cameron Maybin and Rymer Liriano. Although the play looked to be a routine one for Liriano, Maybin called for it early and loudly as Liriano slowed down on the ball. Maybin was forced to make a diving catch as he turned what was supposed to be a routine play into I'm sure what he hoped to be an ESPN highlight. Unfortunately Maybin injured his shoulder on the catch and had to leave the game the following inning.
Since then the play has been reported that Lirano was at fault for not making the play and he has taken all the blame in the San Diego media. But the truth of the matter is that he was called off by a veteran Padres player playing center field, exactly a play you would expect from a right fielder. Even in the video it was clear that Liriano never expected Maybin to call him off and he almost fell over trying to stay out of the center fielders way. The truth of the matter was that Maybin not only made the clearly wrong decision by calling for the ball, he put himself in a bad position by having to dive for it. It was Maybin who wrongly called for that ball way too early.
Today we are heading to Scottsdale to catch the San Diego/San Francisco contest. They have an all you can eat and drink section that we will be taking advantage of. Hopefully Leinenkugels is on the beer menu.
