In one way, fantasy baseball mirrors real baseball. Some owners are afraid to give up a so-called top prospect in order to win now.
Many of these prospects, though, rarely turn into the superstar ownership had envisioned.
I applaud Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski for going against this grain. You may recall Dombrowski picked up Miguel Cabrera and Anibal Sanchez for former No. 1 draft picks Cameron Maybin, Andrew Miller and Jake Turner. These three guys have done nothing but largely disappoint so far rarely ever showing glimpses of their so-called huge potential.
Dombrowski made a mistake by giving 39-year-old closer Joe Nathan a two-year, $20 million contract. Nathan has a 5.73 ERA and 1.49 WHIP this season with five blown saves. The Tigers can't have an unreliable closer with a chance to win the World Series. So Dombrowski went out and got Joakim Soria at the cost of highly rated pitching prospects, Corey Knebel and Jake Thompson.
We'll see how that turns out. But at least now the Tigers should feel needed relief about the backend of their bullpen.
On the handicapping front, I cashed my lone Saturday play with the Reds and I have one play today - an over/under. I am 12-5-2 on my last 19 paid totals. It can be found here: /pregamepros/pro-bettor/bettor.aspx?id=7746#capper.
As always, no bad luck!
