Mike McCarthy is one of the better coaches in the NFL. But he shouldn't be considered elite.
McCarthy once again failed to coach the Packers up when they lost this past Thursday against the Seahawks failing to cover as 6-point 'dogs.
The Packers haven't been able to beat physical teams - read 49ers and Seahawks - the past couple of years and have never really stepped up based on emotion and great coaching, That was evident again last season when they went 2-5-1 after losing Aaron Rodgers. Their two victories came by one point each against Dallas and Atlanta, neither of whom finished with a winning record.
Sometimes you can grade a coach by his spread record as an underdog. The Packers are 1-7-1 ATS the past nine times they've been underdogs.
In assessing great Packer head coaches, McCarthy is behind Mike Holmgren and his name shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath with Vince Lombardi's.
On the handicapping front, I pushed my college football record to 6-1-1 winning with the Pitt Panthers on Friday. I have two late plays going today, a side and totals play. I entered today 3-0 on my college totals. Time is running out on getting my lowest-priced ever NFL season package. As always, no bad luck!
