The Tennessee Volunteers and Ole Miss Rebels will square off this evening at the C.M. Smith Coliseum (7:00pm ET start time, ESPN2). SEC Basketball Odds have the 23rd ranked Rebels listed as a -8.5 against the spread home favorite and the Over/Under set at 141 points. The Volunteers are a +330 moneyline play ($100 wins $330) to notch their second conference win of the season.
Tennessee (9-7) had an up and down non-conference run, earning wins over teams like Wichita State and Xavier while suffering losses to the likes of Oklahoma State, Georgetown, and Memphis. Unfortunately for the Volunteers, conference play, even in a watered down SEC, has seen them perform even worse.
Tennessee opened its league slate with a 92-74 home loss to Ole Miss and it proceeded to lose road games at Alabama and Kentucky to fall to 0-3 against SEC opposition. The Volunteers did halt a four game skid and register their first conference win on Saturday, though, taking out Mississippi State 72-57 in Knoxville.
The odds makers are not expecting a carry over from Tennessee’s destruction of the Bulldogs as it runs into a red hot Ole Miss team. The Rebels, who made 44 trips to the free throw line and out-rebounded the Volunteers 41 to 31 in the first meeting between these two rivals, ride a seven game win streak into tonight’s game.
Mississippi (15-2) improved to 4-0 in SEC play on Saturday with a 76-64 win over Arkansas. The Rebels got 16 points from leading scorer Marshall Henderson while forwards Murphy Holloway and Reginald Buckner both tallied double-doubles in the 12 point win.
Ole Miss, which has won the last two games in this series, is 10-0 at home this season where it is outpacing the opposition by an average of 25.5 points per game. However, Tennessee is 6-1 against the spread in its last seven road games and 11-3 against the spread in its last 14 games against SEC competition.
