Mississippi State and Ole Miss will wrap up their respective regular season slates tonight with a showdown at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford (7:00pm ET start time, ESPNU). Mississippi has an opportunity to do three important things today but some things are more important than others. First, it can snap its current three game skid, a slide that features losses to Georgia, Vanderbilt, and LSU. Second, it can end its three game losing streak to Mississippi State as its last win over the Bulldogs came in 2008. Finally, it can qualify for its first bowl game since 2009 (beat Oklahoma State 21-7 in the Cotton Bowl).

That is a lot to accomplish and certainly a lot of pressure, but the odds makers have at least a certain measure of confidence in the Rebels. That confidence has everything to do with game location, of course, but location matters.

Ole Miss does have some ugly home losses on its resume, but it should represent a significant challenge to the Bulldogs. The Rebels are the fourth best team Mississippi State has faced this season as Dan Mullen’s squad whipped up on mostly inferior competition.

Mississippi State destroyed a host of sub .500 teams, but its three games against club’s that hit back did not go so well. The Bulldogs lost to Alabama, Texas A&M, and LSU by an average of 25.3 points per game. Granted, Ole Miss is not in the same class as the Crimson Tide, Aggies, and Tigers, but it will hit back.
