The Navy Midshipmen welcome the Big Ten’s Indiana Hoosiers to Navy Memorial Stadium in Annapolis today as the two schools meet for just the third time in their history (3:3pm ET start time, CBS Sports Network). Saturday College Football odds are favoring the hosting Middies at -3 against the spread. Today’s game total is set at 61.5 points and the Hoosiers are a +130 moneyline play to win their third game of the season.
Indiana enters today game in a full blown free fall, but the team has been more competitive than its 2-4 record would indicate. Since opening the season with back to back wins over cupcakes Indiana State and Massachusetts, the Hoosiers have dropped four straight games, losing to Ball State, Northwestern, Michigan State, and Ohio State, but they stayed within four points of each of those opponents with the exception of the Wildcats.
Navy’s season has been a near opposite of Indiana’s campaign as it opened with back to back losses (Notre Dame, Penn State) but has since won three of four games, beating Virginia Military Institute, Air Force, and Central Michigan.
It is quite clear from looking at the schedules and results from these two teams that Indiana has performed better against upper echelon opponents. Navy may own the better record, but had it faced the same lineup the Hoosiers took on over the last four weeks it would not have produced a 3-1 mark.
Indiana’s record may be ugly, but it has more than enough offense to stay in this game. That said, Navy’s triple option attack should have a field day against the Hoosiers sieve-like defense as well.
