MLB Wednesday New York Yankees at Detroit Tigers Preview: Start Time, Odds, Free Pick

Detroit Tigers Vs. New York Yankees 8/8/12: Tyrone's Free MLB Baseball Pick

Wednesday night baseball and we will see the New York Yankees take on the Detroit Tigers in game 3 of their 4 game series from Detroit. The game is scheduled for a 7:05 (ET) pm start time and it will be televised live locally. Currently the odds have New York favored at -144, while Milwaukee is dogs of +134. The total for the game sits at 8.5 runs.

Free Analysis: The New York Yankees have seen their once-robust lead in the American League East dwindle to 4 1/2 games over the Baltimore Orioles, and an inability to win on the road and prevail in tight games are among the primary reasons. The Yankees have lost 12 of 18 overall as they prepare to face the surging Detroit Tigers in the third of a four-game series Wednesday. New York led the division by 10 games on July 18 but has since lost seven of nine away from home. The Yankees made things interesting Tuesday, scoring twice off Detroit closer Jose Valverde in the ninth inning and having runners at second and third before Curtis Granderson popped up to end the game. Granderson, New York's leader with 29 homers, finished 0 for 5 for the second straight game, and is batting .119 with 18 strikeouts in his last 10. CC Sabathia (11-3, 3.53 ERA), who hasn't lost since June 7 against Tampa Bay, has won both of his outings against Detroit this year. In his last start versus the Tigers on June 1, the six-time All-Star allowed three runs over seven innings of a 9-4 victory to snap a four-start losing streak at Comerica Park in which he had a 7.56 ERA. The Tigers, meanwhile, are closing in the White Sox thanks to a 16-1 record in the Motor City since July 4. They've outscored opponents 68-28 during their 10-game winning streak there, and are trying to win 11 straight in Detroit for the first time since August 1949. Miguel Cabrera, who homered in his third straight game Tuesday while also driving in three runs, has been instrumental to the home winning streak, batting .385 with six home runs and 13 RBIs. Cabrera is crushing Yankees pitching this season, hitting .355 with five homers and 11 RBIs in eight games and he is 10 for 25 with 2 HR's and 12 RBI's lifetime vs Sabathia. A number of his Yankee hitters will be getting their first look at Anibal Sanchez (1-1, 4.50) tonight. This will be Sanchez's first outing against the Yankees since his major league debut June 25, 2006, when he allowed seven hits over 5 2-3 innings of a 5-0 win for Florida. Sanchez had a rough debut with the Tigers on July 28, permitting five runs and eight hits - including three homers - in six innings of a 5-1 loss at Toronto. The right-hander looked a bit more comfortable against slumping Cleveland on Friday, allowing two runs - one earned - and scattering eight hits over six innings of a 10-2 victory.

Free Pick: Gonna take the Over in this one. Yes CC is on the mound for the Yanks, but he can be hit on the road as he has a 4.26 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP away from home, compared to a 2.81 ERA and an 0.97 WHIP at home. Detroit's offense has been very good of late and they have upped their home average to 4.96 rpg game, after averaging 6.3 rpg in their last 18 games here. Detroit hitters have hit CC well as they have a .270 average with 9 HR's and 31 RBI's in 215 AB's vs him. Anibal Sanchez will be making just his 3rd start for the Cats and he he has one good and one bad start for them so for, but overall he has not fared well vs the AL this year as he has a 5.45 ERA in 6 starts vs this them. His only good start was his last outing vs a Cleveland team that has been very bad offensively of late. The Yanks offense is always waiting to just explode and that may happen here. The do average 4.7 rpg on the road, including giving CC 6.1 rpg worth of support in his road games. We also have an ump (Bill Welke) behind the plate whose games have averaged 9.55 rpg on the year (20 games) and a couple of pens that have not been that good of late. No way this game shouldn't hit at least 9 runs.
