Free Football Pick for LSU
(-5-) at West Virginia 5:00 PM EST ABC: Mountaineers new spread attack has made
great progress in the last 6 quarters under new HC Holgorson and QB Smith. Since trailing Norfolk State at home
12-10 at the half, they have erupted for 87 points in the 2nd half
of that game and at Maryland last week.
That throwing game will need to make continued improvement because they
are only averaging 79/2.6 overland.
Unfortunately for the Mounties, a 1 dimensional offense will not succeed
against this LSU defense. This is
a stop unit that has already diffused high scoring spread attacks Oregon and
Mississippi State holding the Ducks to just 335 yards and Miss. State to just
193 yards. As an extra bonus,
veteran QB Lee has stepped into the signal callers spot operating the improved,
more-balanced offense with great aplomb.
Must respect the fact that WVU nearly won at LSU LY coming up just short
in a 20-14 defeat under then HC Stewart.
But the reality is that LSU has won 19 consecutive September games and
is undefeated in regular season non-con play since 2002. SEC top rated defense easily the #1
unit on the field.

Tech (-20-) at Marshall 3:30 PM EST: We used Ohio U. as your Cat of the Week
against Marshall last week in a 44-7 pummeling of the Herd. Though Marshall contributed to their
destruction with 6 TOs, OU held dominant edges of 559-331 TY, 30-14 with the
chains, and 36-24 clock. Most
impressive was the balance of their offense gaining 271 RY and 288 PY. The Herd appears to committed to
freshman QB Cato who was clearly not prepared. If he thinks that challenge of the Bobcats defense was
overwhelming, wait until he goes up against the Hokies. Though he may be a bit more comfortable
on his home field with a game under his belt expect him to make plenty of
mistakes against the stop unit of DC Foster. The Hokies are dominating foes at the point of attack,
211/4.7 to 55/2.0. Yet, their win
margins against ECU and Ark State, a pair of vastly improved teams, and failure
to cover by a combined 20 points, has kept this line under 3 TDs. The combination of offensive threats QB
Thomas and RB Wilson have not erupted since 256 RY and 262 PY in a 66-13
opening game victory vs. App State, a team who is similar in quality to this
Marshall contingent. With veteran
HC Beamer on a recent run of 25-8 ATS away and 11-4 ATS in all games recently,
this has the potential to be another beatdown of the Herd.
