The San Diego State Aztecs are on the road in college football action on Friday night, taking on the Utah State Aggies. The game is scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on the CBS Sports Network. San Diego State continues to be a power in the Mountain West Conference in football. The Aztecs are now 3-0 this season in league play and are taking on a Utah State team that is just 1-3 but looking to play spoilers in this one.
The Aztecs have the best player in the country nobody really knows about in Donnel Pumphrey. He already has better than 1,240 yards on the season through just seven games, averaging 178 on the ground each game. If he continues with that pace Pumphrey will surpass the 2,100 yard mark for a season. Some think he could be within striking distance of Barry Sanders’ mark of 2,628 yards, an NCAA record, but he would have to more than double his current yardage to even reach that number.
Utah State is a decent team against the run, allowing 151.6 yards per game, which ranked 50th in the country. That’s just pure numbers without really looking at it from a game-by-game perspective, however. USC finished with 178, Air Force finished with 213 and Colorado State piled up 224 against Utah State. Knowing Pumphrey is going to get a ton of carries is not a surprise to anybody, but it’s a completely different thing for Utah State to be able to stop him.
Last year San Diego State won 48-14 in a game where Utah State turned it over four times. That gives them some revenge in this instance and the Aggies and Utah State probably needs a win here to potentially be bowl eligible with several tough games remaining.
It’s nice to play in primetime on a Friday night on national television, Utah State could be able to rally around that and put together a gritty showing here.
But San Diego State is just too tough on both sides of the football. The Aztecs can play defense and don’t give up a ton of points, they’ll stick to the ground game offensively and win a close game.
