The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are on the road in college football action on Saturday, taking on the Syracuse Orange in East Rutherford, New Jersey inside Metlife Stadium. The game is scheduled for a noon start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPN. Does laying double digits on the road, with this Notre Dame team, look like a good idea? The Fighting Irish fired defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder after another terrible outing by his team on Saturday, a move many have been calling for in South Bend. This year opponents have been scoring 33.5 points per game against the Irish, but only Nevada has been held under 36 points by the Fighting Irish defense.
But just because VanGorder is gone doesn’t mean the problem is fixed. Notre Dame’s personnel just isn’t working on that side of the football this season and they have a lot of problems to fix. Head coach Brian Kelly said all 22 positions were up for grabs, but at 1-3 how much more does anybody on that team really have to offer? DeShone Kizer is a solid QB with 11 touchdowns already on the season and he should be able to put up big numbers against the Orange, who are also abysmal on the defensive side of the ball, yielding almost 35 points per game to opponents. The orange come in with a 2-2 record but have been blasted by Louisville and South Florida, now they take on another higher-scoring team in Notre Dame.
The Eric Dungey to Amba Etta-Tawo combination could be big here for the Orange. Etta-Tawo already has 40 catches through four games with five touchdowns and better than 700 yards receiving.
With both defenses being terrible, safe to go with the points here.
