The Detroit Tigers are hosting the Kansas City Royals tonight in Major League Baseball action. The game is scheduled for a 7:10 p.m. start time and the MLB Odds for the contest have the Tigers favored to pick up the victory at home.

Big series for both teams here, the Tigers are looking to work past a lackluster start to the first half of the season while the defending World Series champion Kansas City Royals might have seen their title window close. The Cleveland Indians look to be the best team in the division but both KC and Detroit are fighting for second place, this series here in Detroit could be a spring board for either club.

Justin Verlander gets the baseball for Detroit, he’s 8-6 with a 4.07 ERA this season but has victories in six of his last eight decisions. He’s piled up 21 career wins over the Royals, which is the most against any team for Verlander, and his 3.26 career ERA against Kansas City give him an edge tonight. Verlander’s splits are pretty similar for the year and even though Comerica Park is a pitcher-friendly one, he’s given up four more home runs there compared to the road in the same amount of innings and starts.

In one start this season against the Royals, Verlander picked up a win while allowing four earned runs in seven innings.

Ian Kennedy gets the start for KC, he’s 6-7 with a solid 3.97 ERA on the year. He made a start against Detroit earlier this season, going 6 1/3 innings and allowing two earned runs in a loss. 

With everyone coming off the All-Star break, it will be interesting to see how strong the pitching can be. The Royals have been awful on the road this year (16-30), Detroit has actually been decent (23-16) in home games. This is a very important game for Verlander and the Tigers.
